Undertake this challenging 11 mile round hike to the base of the iconic towers in Chile's Torres del Paine national park.
The trek to the base of Las Torres (towers) is one of the most celebrated in Torres del Paine, though it isn't without its challenges. After crossing the Ascencio River, you will hike up a continuous ascent through verdant lenga forest for panoramic view of the surrounding pampa landscape and the Asencio Valley, with shimmering lakes off to the south.
The trail continues with a descent to the El Chileno campsite (it is possible to complete this first half on horse-back). The vegetation here is that of Pre-Andean Matorral, giving way an old-growth forest of Lenga trees, from where you will begin to ascend again towards the Glacier Torres. You then head out of the forest on a long and rocky final ascent, before arriving at your destination - the glacier-fed lagoon at the base of Las Torres. The three granite giants tower upwards, right in front of your eyes.
After plenty of time to eat some snacks and take photographs, you will begin your return leg, looking out along the way for some of the local bird life, perhaps condors, black eagles and caranchos.
