Delhi is located on the Yamuna River (a tributary of the Ganges) and is split into Old Delhi in the north of the city and New Delhi in the south. It is India's third-largest city with a population of around 19 million people. 

Delhi's climate is one of extremes, with very hot temperatures in the summer months from Mid-March to the end of June, followed by heavy monsoon rains from July to September. The best time to visit is from October to March, when rainfall is very low (if at all) and the temperatures ranging for 20-30 degrees centigrade, ideal for sightseeing and exploring.

Agra lies on the banks of the Yamuna River and is the location for India's most famous building, the awe-inspiring Taj Mahal. Agra began life as a small village, but in 1504 the muslim ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. Sultan Sikandar Lodi moved his capital to Agra. The city came to prominence in the era of the Mughals, where it remained the capital of the Mughal Empire. These mighty rulers built the Great Red Fort and nearby Fatehpur Sikri. 

It was Shah Jahan, a keen architect, who built the Taj Mahal in loving memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1653. After the decline of the Mughal Empire, the Marathas controlled the city and called it Agra. The British took over control in 1803.

The other highlight of the Golden Triangle is Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan. Known as the Pink City, due to the colour of many of its historic buildings.
