Located in scenic mountains beside the gushing River Ganges, this famous town retains a spiritual magnetism.

Rishikesh is a peaceful town located on the banks of the Ganges River in the northern state of Uttarakhand. Known as the yoga capital of the world, Rishikesh became famous in the 1960’s and now hosts a large number of ashrams, temples, spas and the places dedicated to the study of yoga. The Ganges is a lot cleaner here than downriver in Varanasi, so many travellers join locals to bathe in the river. The town has a gentle, reflective atmosphere, especially with the sound of temple bells in the evenings.

It is a super place to visit for a few days, or even longer if you are an enthusiast of yoga and spiritual studies. Nearby Rajaji National Park is well worth a visit, known particularly for its wild elephants. Trekking in the scenic mountains with a local is also an enjoyable pastime; the Valley of Flowers National Park from June to September is a riot of colour. And don’t miss the chance to visit Corbett Tiger Reserve (4 hours drive from Rishikesh), where you can take a safari to observe the protected tigers as well as monkeys, elephants, leopards and crocodiles.

Being located 340 metres above sea level, the climate in Rishikesh and around is ideal year round (mid 20 degrees centigrade); the warmest temperatures (around 30 degrees centigrade) in the summer months.
