Sumatra is located to the west of Java with a population of around 58 million people, with the main attraction being tropical jungle where orang-utans, elephants and other wildlife make their home. The region has forests, volcanoes, lakes, and dramatic landscapes, ideal for trekking.
Sumatra has sadly seen much deforestation in the last few decades, driven by Indonesia’s rubber, palm oil, sugarcane and coffee industries. The good news is now there are many projects working to reverse this, to help protect the remaining jungle through the protection of National Parks.
The largest city is Medan, located in the north of the island is a fascinating mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Batak people living together in harmony.
From Medan, explore Gunung Leuser National Park from a jungle lodge. Trek in the jungle in search of rehabilitated orang-utans and if you go deep into the jungle wild orang-utans. If you are lucky, you might also observe elephants, tigers and rhinos.
Five hours from Medan is the beautiful Lake Toba, the largest crater lake of its kind in the world.
There are a further 11 national parks in Sumatra, from Sembilang National Park on the east coast to Kerinci Seblat National Park, the largest national park in Sumatra, covering over 5,000 square miles in four provinces.
