Jungle Lodge, Tangkahan

In the morning enjoy a guided tour starting with the city centre and an interesting melting pot of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Batak people living together in harmony.

Visit the Maimoon Sultan’s Deli Palace, built in1888 by the Sultan of Deli. This beautiful palace combines traditional elements of Malay, Islamic as well as Spanish and Indian architectural elements. Even up to present times, the palace is inhabited by the Sultan, who remains a symbolic figure of importance to Indonesian community

After an included lunch, we visit the city’s oldest Hindu temple Sri Mariamman, located in Medan’s Little India, locally referred to as Kampung Madras. It is devoted to the goddess Mariamman and other Hindu gods. The temple is a meeting point for worshippers during Thaipusam and Deevapali festivals.

Next will be a stop at the impressive Vihara Gunung Timur, Southeast Asia’s biggest Buddhist temple.

Continue to Tangkahan where we register at the Gunung Leuser National Park Visitor Centre before walking to the lodge, located on the other side of the river along an impressive suspension bridge.

Check in at the lodge in Tangkahan for a 2-night stay on a full board basis.

Elephant visit and bathing

After breakfast at the lodge, walk to the Elephant Rehabilitation Centre, the starting point for a memorable activity with Sumatran elephants which are native to the island.

Start the program with an unforgettable experience bathing the elephants in the Batang Serangan River. We visit the rehabilitation centre and the lodge along the river & trek through the jungle.

The rest of the day is at leisure. Walk around the lodge in search of some resident Thomas leaf monkeys in their natural habitat. Alternatively, take a refreshing dip in the clear river.

Jungle trek and Bukit Lawang

After breakfast, enjoy a moderate guided jungle trek, with some climbs and fun descents. Explore the forest crossing rivers and streams, looking at the natural environment and its abundant flora with trees, medicinal plants, concentrations of butterflies, monkeys and birds. 

After lunch (included), travel by a local jeep to Bukit Lawang passing through plantations with mountain landscapes at the horizon. Admire beautiful sceneries of river which cross through plantations. Sometimes you will find long tail macaque plays on the river side.

Arrive in Bukit Lawang and check in to Ecolodge Bukit Lawang Cottages for a 2-night stay on a half board basis (breakfast and lunch).

Orangutan Trekking

Bukit Lawang at the entrance to Gunung Leuser National Park and is one of the last sanctuary of the Sumatran orangutan.

After breakfast, depart on foot for a 6 hour trek in primary Sumatra rainforest. Steep slopes and dense vegetation will bring you to the excitement of the jungle. Here you have the opportunity to see several species of indigenous flora and fauna and semi or wild Sumatran Orangutans.

After a picnic lunch continue to explore the jungle as you return to the lodge. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Yogyakarta city tour, Prambanan & Ramayana Dance Performance

We start today with a visit to The Sultan’s Palace, also known as Kraton - the central aspect of the Javanese cosmology being at the centre of the Mount Merapi and Parangtritis Beach lines. The building was constructed between 1756 and 1790, a fine example of traditional Javanese sultanate architecture. Remaining today as the residence of the Sultan, this living museum features a showcase of Javanese Culture and relics and depending on your day of visiting there will be a cultural performance ranging from Golek Menak Puppet‘s to classical Javanese Poetry performance known as Macapat.

Continue with a ride by becak and explore Kauman village built in the vicinity of the Kraton. This village is the central keepers of the Islamic religion as authorized by the Sultanate. The small gangs (laneways) of this village are so designed to ensure minimal disturbance of noise and traffic so as to not interrupt the Santri or Islamic students from their study. It was also said that by ensuring the laneways were only passable on foot - every man was equal.

Lunch is included today.

In the mid-afternoon, leave Yogyakarta for Prambanan. These huge ancient Hindu temples were built in the 9th century and the three main inner shrines are dedicated to the Hindu trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. UNESCO named Prambanan a Heritage Site in 1991. Your guide will explain the history and symbolism of the temples as you walk around.

After the visit continue to the nearby Prambanan local restaurant where you will enjoy an early dinner followed by a traditional performance of the Ramayana ballet dance at an opened theatre with the illuminated temples of Prambanan as a background.

Explore Borobudur

After breakfast, drive to one of the highlights of your trip, Borobudur. Together with your local guide, explore this massive Buddhist Temple - the largest in the world - and discover the incredible history behind its construction. Comprised of thousands of volcanic and river stone blocks, the temple was assembled entirely by human labour and took more than 75 years to complete. These days, the UNESCO Heritage site is still visible in its full glory - with magnificent carvings and an unusual, yet surprisingly beautiful bulk structure. 

Lunch will be served in a local restaurant near Borobudur.

Next, you’ll get a taste for local life with a horse cart ride through Candirejo Village. Known as a dokar, the local horse cart will take you through this peaceful, charming village. You’ll travel along small lanes lined with traditional houses and stop to see village activities such as making cassava crackers, playing the gamelan and harvesting of local crops.

Continue with a visit to Mendut and Pawon temples, nearby Borobudur. Older than Borobudur, this pyramid-shaped temple houses three impressively carved stone statues.

Fly to Pangkalan Bun, Kalimantan

Transfer from your hotel to Semarang Airport for take domestic flight to Pangkalan Bun, Kalimantan.

On arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, our guide and driver will be waiting to provide transport to Kumai Port. At the port, embark a local klotok boat for a 3-night scenic journey along the Kumai and Sekonyer Rivers on a full board basis. 

Begin the cruise heading along the Kumai River. After 20 minutes, enter the much smaller Sekonyer River, which marks the border of TanjungPuting National Park. The lush vegetation along the river bank first consists of Nipa palm and is slowly replaced by Pandan trees. 

Lunch is served on board. 

While cruising through Tanjung Puting National Park, take note of its variety of tropical animals. The area is renowned for its spectacular ecological and biological diversity, and contains mangrove swamps, rainforest and dense jungles filled with rare primates such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys and macaques.  

Enjoy dinner this evening on board the boat surrounded by the beauty of nature.

Camp Leakey Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre

After breakfast on board the klotok boat, we cruise on the Sekonyer River towards Camp Leakey.

On the way, your guide will point out the various types of animals seen here; kingfishers, broadbills and hornbills are almost a guaranteed sighting!

Continue to Camp Leakey. Housing the largest population of orangutans in the world, it is the most famous place for orangutan research. Over the years as many as 200 orangutans have been reintroduced to the wild here. Today the camp only operates as a feeding platform, but orangutans are still fed and medically monitored by the local rangers. There are only three feeding platforms in Tanjung Puting providing supplementary food to the orangutans so as to limit their reliance on feeding and to encourage them to forage in the jungle. 

After lunch, disembark at Camp Leakey into the jungle where there is a chance to spot gibbons, long tail macaque and wild pigs. Observe a feeding time where the rangers offer bananas and other fruits to the orangutans. Sitting with the park rangers, enjoy the opportunity to get up close with these amazing animals. 

Back on the boat, observe many proboscis monkeys, found only in Borneo, that gather in large groups around the banks of the river. There is also a chance to spot a few orangutans in this area as they come to pick up fruit from the pandan trees in the late afternoon. 

Dinner is served onboard the boat.

Tanjung Puting National Park

Wake to the sounds of the jungle and enjoy another full-day exploring the jungles and two other feeding platforms inside Tanjung Puting National Park. 

Cruise upstream to Pondok Tanguy where we observe e feeding time of the Orangutans. After spotting orangutans, return to the boat and cruise downstream to Pasalat Rainforest Station where several institutions and NGO’s are working to preserve the natural habitat of orangutans in the area. Continue with a cruise back to Tanjung Harapan Camp for a visit to the final feeding platform in the park.

Cross to Harapan Village, one of the only settlements along the river. Take a walk through this village, meet with local Malayan families, and partake in some of their daily activities.

Coffee tour of Bali

Today enjoy a special coffee tour in Bali. Start the day at the source an organic coffee plantation, exploring the fields, enjoying the fresh air and lush highland surroundings. Witness the process of roasting the beans, seeing traditional methods used by generations of coffee farmers. Sample cups of the freshly roasted beans, gaining a greater appreciation for high-quality, hand-roasted beans.

Enjoy a local lunch together with the farmers at the community house of the village.

We return to Ubud and head directly to a coffee studio. Meet with a trained barista to learn expert coffee brewing techniques. Choose from a variety of courses, focusing on espresso, latte art or professional ways to judge the quality of coffee. This interactive class is the perfect way to conclude the day’s coffee discovery tour. Return to the hotel late this afternoon filled with new knowledge about Bali’s coffee culture.

Charms of Ubud

Today we visit Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest. This heavily forested park features three ancient Hindu temples, beautiful jungle-covered statues and, of course, several groups of indigenous macaques. 

We continue along Hanoman Street to a local community space to learn how to make the unique Balinese offerings called Canang Sari, which are integral part of Balinese life and their gratitude to the Gods. Refresh with a chilled coconut before going on a stroll across Ubud’s bustling art market. We also visit a local artist.

Lunch at local restaurant is included today.

We continue to the Blanco Renaissance Museum, a quirky former private residence and studio of painter Antonio Blanco. Explore the collection of his works, which span from different periods of his illustrious career, and hear the tales of the flamboyant, creative Ubud expat. We then hike up one of Ubud’s most scenic paths. amidst verdant fields with panoramic views onto the surrounding lush valleys. At the end of the path a foot massage and a tranquil spa awaits.

The Komodo Islands

Travel to the jetty and board a local boat and cruise to Rinca Island. Arrive in LohBuaya Bay where we register at the Komodo National Park Office. Smaller than Komodo, and mostly covered with savanna, it is easy to observe the dragons and other animals such as wild deer, water buffaloes, monkeys, boars and horses on a short, one-and-a-half-hours trek under the guidance of a local park ranger.

We continue by boat to Padar Island. After a short trek, witness one of the area’s most spectacular panoramic viewpoints from atop one of the island’s tallest hills. Cruise to to Komodo Island, the largest and most famous of all islands in Komodo National Park and covering over 390 square kilometres. It also has the largest community of Komodo dragons and many other animals such as wild horses, buffaloes and pigs. Enjoy a 1½ hour trek under the guidance of a local park ranger who will explain all about the dragon’s and life on the islands. 

Lunch will be served on the boat as we cruise to the island of Kanawa for snorkelling. There is a dazzling array of tropical fish and coral species here. 

In the late afternoon we cruise back to Labuan Bajo after a wonderful day you will never forget.

Mirror Cave and Local Market

Today we visit Mirror Cave, set within an impressive prominent rock formation near Labuan Bajo. Through a hole in the cave, rays of light find their way into the cave’s inside walls where they perform a spectacular show of reflected sunlight. This fascinating effect is caused by some slick, mirror-like rock surfaces that reflect the light. Hence the cave’s name, Batu Cermin, which means ‘mirror rock’ in Indonesian. We then continue to a local market. 

The rest of the day is at leisure, relaxing at your hotel.
