The capital city of the Department of Amazonas and an ideal base to discover the nearby pre-inca treasures of Keulap and the remarkable tombs embedded in the cliffs.

The small city (a population only 50,000) of Chachapoyas in Northern Peru is in fact the capital of the Department of Amazonas. Founded in 1538, the city is an ideal base to explore the incredible pre-inca sights and landscapes that are nearby.

This part of Peru is not yet on the scale of tourism that exists in Cusco and Machu Picchu, so you can explore the treasures of the Andean highlands without the crowds. Discover the lost cities of the pre-Inca Chachapoya people and their burial grounds with tombs embedded into cliffs (some with mummified bodies inside).

Visit Kuelap, a once fortified city located high in the mountains with high walls and many unique buildings remaining. Take a hike with our guide to observe the tombs in the cliffs and a nature walk to the spectacular Gocta Waterfall is also recommended. On your way spot many beautiful species of birds that thrive in this mountain region. In the city itself, enjoy a relaxed stroll visiting the historic centre, several churches, a small museum and small streets with interesting architecture.
