Cusco is the former capital of the Inca empire and today still shows evidence of a time when it was one of the most important cities in the world. Ancient Incan foundations today support sumptuous colonial era buildings erected following the Spanish conquest of Peru, topped with the amber tiles which today are a symbol of one of Latin America’s most beautiful and popular cities. Most visitors combine Cusco with visits to the nearby Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and perhaps the four day Inca Trail.
Coastal Lima is the cosmopolitan capital of Peru, famed for its excellent museums, and world-class cuisine. It is a city of wide avenues, large plazas, green parks and ornate buildings in a historic centre.
Further south lies beautiful Arequipa, known as the ‘White City’, situated in a sweeping valley and dramatically framed by three snow-capped volcanoes. The city gets its nickname from the colour of its intricately decorated colonial facades, largely created from white volcanic sillar rock. From here, most visitors set off on tours to the Colca Canyon, around three hours away by road.
