Argentine Patagonia is a mysterious land of sparkling lakes, towering glaciers and remote communities, spreading southwards to the very end of the continent.

The highlight of Argentine Patagonia is the magnificent Perito Moreno glacier, located two hours from the ramshackle town of El Calafate in Lake Argentina. Visitors here are dwarfed by the gigantic wall of ice and gasp in awe as huge chunks detach themselves from the great mass and plunge with a thunderous roar into the icy depths of the lake below. Wooden walkways provide both panoramic and close-up views of this natural wonder, but to see it in all its glory you can take a short boat ride to come face-to-face with the ice, or strap on your ice-trekking boots for an unforgettable walk across the glacier itself.

The Península Valdés on the Atlantic coast is a wonderful nature reserve, where visitors can encounter elephant seals, sea lions and Magellanic penguins, as well as glimpses of the occasional killer whale. Between June and December, Southern right whales come to breed here, whilst the skies are brought to life by albatrosses, petrels and cormorants, amongst others.

For nature lovers, Patagonia really is the perfect destination. As well as the glacier, visitors can stay at the small town of El Chalten, from where a number of world class hikes lead you past alpine meadows, thick woodland and wild rivers, often culminating in an isolated lake in the shadows of towering chiseled mountain peaks. Further north the Lake District provides a stunning backdrop to an Argentine road trip, whilst head all the way south to the town of Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego for breathtaking cruises to spectacular glaciers and fjords.
