Just over the border in neighbouring Honduras, Copán is another magnificent Mayan archaeological site, in fact it was one of the most important and prosperous centres of the empire. Set deep in dense jungle, it features a number of important structures and monuments, many still half-entangled in roots. Nature trails and expert guides lead visitors around the park, offering a new and different perspective on the mighty Mayan empire. Copán is close to the beautiful colonial city of Antigua and the archaeological site at Quirigua, famed for its intricate sandstone stelae (stone columns decorated by intricate carvings) and having the largest public space in the Mayan empire. It therefore combines perfectly with a trip to Guatemala and perhaps Belize.
