1. Forts and Palaces 

Rajasthan is known as the ‘Land of Kings’. Indeed, a visit to India’s largest state is an amazing chance to rediscover the grandeur of times gone by. In Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer you can explore the region’s magnificent regal history whilst touring thousand-year-old forts and palaces. Amongst nine UNESCO world-heritage sites, Rajasthan is home to the world-famous Amber Palace. This spectacular 16^th century palace is a stunning showcase of Rajput glory and is astoundingly well preserved. Visit at either sunrise or sunset for the chance to witness a breathtaking vista of Jaipur.

2. Festivals

Another reason to visit Rajasthan is the chance to soak in the atmosphere at one of its many festivals. Taking place throughout the calendar, Rajasthan plays host to some 25 different festivals. In November, you can witness the Pushkar camel fair – a fascinating blend of camel trading with a jolly carnival atmosphere. Or perhaps, in January you might be able to stop by Jaipur for the International Kite Festival. Why not arrive a few days early to the spectacularly colourful Holi festival in March for Brij Holi. Immerse yourself in the beautiful festival spirit of Brij Holi as you celebrate the worship of Lord Krishna amongst a sea of bright colours.

3. Village life

Explore Rajasthani agricultural life as you stroll through villages  accompanied by camels and cattle. Understand the unique pace of life in this fascinating part of India and the beautiful cultures that live there. Discover quaint mud houses and thatched roofs in Khuri, one of Rajasthan’s many picturesque hamlets. Don’t be surprised if you see cows being fed the first freshly cooked chapatti of the day.

4.     Wildlife

No doubt, Rajasthan is home to world famous wildlife and is an amazing place to witness the often-under-appreciated biodiversity India offers. At Ranthambore National Park, you’ll get the chance to see some of India’s unique wildlife amongst 10^th century forts as you explore the park on a 4 x 4 safari. India is one of the finest places in the world to go birdwatching. At Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary, witness some of Rajasthan’s 450 bird species, such as the famous kingfisher or the open-billed stork. Finally, at Sariska Tiger Reserve you’ll have the opportunity to get close to India’s supreme big cats as you roam the park on a jeep safari.

5.     Food

Arguably one of the best reasons to visit this northern Indian state, is the chance to get to know its cuisine. Rajasthani gastronomic culture is spectacularly rich, and any visitor will have the chance to try famous local dishes such as gate ki sabzi or a traditional thali meal. Whether you are a meat-eater or vegetarian, there’s plenty to taste and to inevitably fall in love with. You certainly won’t have to worry about going hungry!

6.     Bazaars and Shopping

Why not spend your time in Rajasthan at one of its many bustling bazaars. Each market has its own unique identity and presents an opportunity to find something amazing to take home with you. Perhaps visit Johari Bazaar with its amazing hand-made jewellery and meet the artisans that craft these beautiful pieces. Alternatively, spend an afternoon at the Clock Tower Market in Jodhpur and make sure to get some traditional spices to use in your own cooking.

7.     Temples and shrines

India is home to around 2 million temples in total and there are many beautiful shrines to be seen in Rajasthan. One must-see is the Birla Mandi in Jaipur. A relatively modern temple, built by the wealthy Birla family in 1998 its white marble exterior makes it a delight upon the eyes. Alternatively visit the famous Karni Mata Temple at Bikaner. This 20^th century temple has gained notoriety because of the way rats are venerated here. As they are seen by worshippers as the reincarnations of humans, some 20,000 rodents are treated like royalty with fresh milk laid out for them each day.

8.     Colourful cities

Make sure you have your cameras at the ready as you explore the cities of Rajasthan. Each city has its own unique colour profile whether that be the spectacular blues of Jodhpur or the pink city of Jaipur. Truly, the colourful nature of the landscape reflects the vibrancy of Rajasthani culture and adds to the unique experience of a visit to the northern state. Of course, it makes for the perfect photo opportunity.

9.     Folk art and dance

Enjoy some entertaining folk art and dance, such as the Bhavai dance. This fascinating historic dance form sees women dancing with pitchers on their heads. Alternatively, you might get the chance to see the Kabelia or Snake Charmer Dance where women dance to a song played by the men on traditional instruments. Whatever you may encounter, the rich culture of Rajasthani folk art and dance will teach about the history of the region.

10.  Lakes

Rajasthan is home to many stunning lakes set amongst beautiful surrounds. None more beautiful is Lake Pichola, the Jewel of Udaipur. This freshwater lake, created in 1362 is a real highlight of Rajasthan. Indeed, it was so beautiful that Maharana Udai Singh founded the city of Udaipur on its banks. Take a gentle cruise at sunset to see Udaipur in its full glory as the romantic city reflects of the calm waters of Lake Pichola. Or, in Jaipur, have a look at the spectacular water palace that sits on the stunning Man Sagar Lake.
