Otavalo Market

Today we head north to the province of Imbabura, an area of lakes, snow-covered mountains and terraced farmlands. For centuries, regional markets have played an important role in Indian life, providing regular gathering places for trade and socialising. The colourful local markets of the Andean Valleys are famous for their fine handicrafts. 

The most famous market is at Otavalo. Here, we will visit the textile market located at the “Plaza of Ponchos” where you can buy handcrafts, including tapestries made in the Spanish weaving loom as well as the indigenous backstrap loom. We also visit a colonial hacienda and the small village of Peguche with its impressive waterfall.

Fly to Puerto Maldonado and onto your Amazon Lodge

Transfer to the airport and fly to Puerto Maldonado. On arrival, our naturalist guide will transfer you to a dugout canoe for the trip up the Tambopata River to the lodge where you stay for 3-nights with all meals and excursions included. In the late afternoon set off for an introductory walk into the "terra firme" forest behind the lodge dominated by giant Brazil-nut and Dipteryx trees.

Lake Condenado and Macaw clay licks

Today with your guide, we explore Lake Condenado by foot and paddle canoe. This area is rich in bird and aquatic life. A family of giant otters live in the vicinity of the lake and are often observed. Birds abound especially rufescent tiger-herons, great egrets, wattled jacanas, hoatzin, the noisy donacobius and many others.

Continue to Collpa, the second largest clay cliffs lining the Tambopata River in this area.

Tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas

Up early today for a tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, visiting. the village of Chinchero where indigenous people from the surrounding communities congregate to trade their goods. Chinchero Market is also well-known for its woven handcrafts typical of the region. 

From here we drive to the Moray ruins, used by the Incas as a type of open-air crop laboratory, and onto the Maras pre-Inca salt mines located on a wide-open hill above the Urubamba Valley. We visit the huge fortress of Ollantaytambo, the archaeological complex believed to have been a gigantic agricultural, administrative, social, religious and military centre.

Continue to Pisac a small colonial village built by Viceroy Francisco de Toledo on the ruins of an Inca citadel. Here, enjoy the local market and nearby ruins.
