Upgrade my browserMexico is synonymous with its Caribbean and Pacific beaches, undoubtedly some of the best in the world. Whether you prefer luxurious resorts or isolated islands, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
The Yucatán Peninsula owes its wonderful beaches to the limestone soil of the area, which naturally filters the water, leaving it a crystal-clear blue and the sand powdery white. It also forms natural caves, underground rivers and cenotes, perfect in which to swim. Such natural beauty and the proximity of outstanding archaeological sites have inevitably attracted mass tourism, but there remains exclusive resorts and hotels and pockets of isolated beaches to escape the crowds and find your own slice of this Mexican paradise.
The epicentre of the peninsula is the world famous Riviera Maya, home to some of the best resorts, large coral reefs and palm-tree lined stretches of impossibly perfect beaches, offering complete luxury and relaxation. Even here though it is still possible to find seclusion, away from the package tours.
One of the most interesting parts of the Yucatán is Tulum, where the remains of an important former Mayan seaport are perched 15 metres above a picture-perfect Caribbean beach. From here it is also an easy trip to the nearby and lesser-known Mayan archaeological site Cobá and its ancient pyramid shrouded in dense jungle.
For complete seclusion, two quieter beach options, just off the Caribbean coast, are the small islands of Holbox and Isla Mujeres. These havens of calm are a great alternative to the busier resorts, perfect for leisurely strolls and stunning sunsets followed by balmy evenings.
On the other side of the country, the pacific ocean coast also is dotted with attractive beach resorts in sheltered coves such as Zihuatanejo, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo and Careyes. All have excellent hotels from simple tourist to small boutique and exclusive luxury, with excellent service and cuisine.
