Peer into the smouldering crater of an active volcano in the Central Valley, not far from San Jose.
A visit to the Poas Volcano, sat within the national park to which it gives its name in the Central Valley, is one of the best ways to truly appreciate the intensity of the volcanic activity which occurs in Costa Rica. Seen from afar there is often little to betray the power and pent-up fury happening within. From a safe viewing point near the 1.5km wide crater rim, you will be able to look directly into the heart of the volcano and watch as the lagoon bubbles and smokes from within, constantly changing and always alive with activity.
The Poas Volcano can be easily combined with a visit to the exotic La Paz Waterfalls Gardens and perhaps the Doka Coffee Plantation.
