North of Brasilia, this region of flat-topped mountains, waterfalls and rolling hills is a major centre for hiking.

The cerrado is the name given to the unique tropical savannah that covers the elevated central plains of Brazil. Chapada dos Veadeiros offers a sparsely populated landscape, with large table-top mountains, canyons and deep gorges, plus hidden waterfalls and pools, perfect for a swim. Here too are majestic grasslands, dotted with trees, dense low-growing brush and thick evergreen forest. The area is a major centre for eco-tourism, outdoor activities, trekking and some "alternative" celestial stargazing.
